Why is it better to scan negatives instead of printed photos?

Printed photo is a proceseed version of negative. While processing the negative, there is a certain information loss. So, printed photo always have lesser information than a negative. Furthermore, the negatives are usually in better condition than the comparable photos. So, it is always better to scan negatives over printed photos. ×

How do I know which side of negative to scan?

You need to scan the side that has photographic emulsion. The emulsion side is usually less glossy when compared to non-emulsion side. But to identify this is not so easy. It takes lot of time to figure it out. So, instead identify the numbering scheme on the negative. Numbering is done on the non-emulsion side. So, when inserting a negative in the negative scanner, make sure you can read the number on the negative. ×

Can I use Digital ICE while scanning black and white negatives?

No, you can’t use Digital ICE while scanning black and white negatives. Digital ICE works on the principle of infrared light detecting the dust and scratches. This is not compatible with the silver halide emulsion on black and white negatives. So, the image looks completely out of focus if Digital ICE is used on B&W negatives. The only solution is to disable ICE when scanning the B&W negatives and use Adobe Photoshop Elements to manually restore the negative. That is why B&W negative scanning is expensive when compared to colour negative scanning. ×

On a given strip of negatives, can I mark just the images I want scanned?

At ScanCorner, we scan the entire negative strip and crop the individual images. It is operationally very complex and time consuming for us to scan only the marked negatives. This adds to the cost of scanning the negatives. So, we scan all the negatives we receive. But if you have huge order and you want to have scans of selected negatives, we can offer that by adding some surcharge to the total cost.
